How to Add Additional Domains to a Vultr VPS

These fairly simple step by step instructions have been confirmed to work on a Vultr VPS with LAMP with Bitvise. They may possibly work for other Vultr Linux VPS set ups as well.

The first step is to log into your VPS server with file transfer software. If you don’t have one, the free Bitvise SSH Client is a noteworthy solution. Bitvise is a free secure file transfer software and it’s easy to use.

Of course, other file transfer software should work as well.

After you you’ve logged into your Vultr VPS through appropriate file transfer software follow the steps below.

Step 1
Add/Create folder domainname (without extension) in: /var/www

Step 2
Add/Create file index.html in: /var/www/domainnamefolder

Step 3
Go to: /etc folder and edit “hosts” file. For each domain to add, add line:
127.0.0.1 domainname.com

Step 4
Go to: /apache2 folder and open: /sites-available folder
Add/Create file: domainname.com.conf

Edit the file to contain:
<code>
DocumentRoot /var/www/domainname
ServerName www.domainname.com
ServerAlias
domainname.com
</code>

between the brackets <>,
replace code with VirtualHost *:80
replace /code with /VirtualHost

Step 5
Go to the terminal and enable a new additional site, for each url type or copy in terminal :
sudo a2ensite siteurl.com (replace siteurl.com with your domain name).

Note that if you use the copy and paste function in your Linux terminal, most likely paste will not work. Instead of ctrlV try right clicking your mouse instead.

Step 6
Reload command in terminal, type or copy in terminal:
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload

Again, if you use the copy and paste function in your Linux terminal, most likely paste will not work. Instead of ctrlV try right clicking your mouse instead.

Step 7
a. Make sure the DNS is added in the Vultr control panel with the correct IP Address.
b. Make sure name server is edited your domain registrar with the correct Vultr name servers.

That should do it.
